Hello! I'm Jennifer Yu

I am a Korean American designer based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Advertising/PR at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media and Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am interested in pursuing the fields of UX/UI design, digital design, and marketing.

Purpose behind creativity...

Throughout my undergraduate experience, most of my involvement revolved around empowering the Asian American community on campus through my design and publicity work. I witnessed the impact visuals and multimedia have in building community, storytelling, and advocacy. I had the privilege of mocking up the initial logo design for the first Asian American Center, a goal Asian American students have been advocating for since the 1990s at UNC. I collaborated with other executive board members in the Asian American Students Association in creating a graphic series that aimed to educate others on Asian American history, highlighting 12 significant events, as well as a graphic series encouraging others to vote for the primaries. Through other various collaborative design and photo editing projects, I also highlighted unconventional narratives about topics, such as orientalism, colorism, body image, and mental health. I discovered purpose in utilizing my creativity, design, and multimedia skills to help uplift marginalized voices, share narratives, and build empathetic connections.

A bit more about me...

Some of my other interests outside of design, identity, and social activism include illustration/crafts (recently got into earring making with polymer clay!), DJing for my campus radio station WXYC (long live free form radio!), fashion, reading (currently reading A Tale for Time Being by Ruth Ozeki and rereading All About Love by Bell Hooks), and spending time with my family, friends, and dog.
